AC Dance with NEVE

Image description: White background and black text with the name and description of a dance class surrounds a portrait of a dancer. It is a Hip and elbow up selfie portrait of the artist NEVE. Neve is a rosy brown-skinned Black non-binary and trans person with short red hair, wearing a black velvet dress and black vinyl gloves. They are posing on their hands and knees in front of a white wall, left gloved hand lifted and fingers spread.

What changes when we call a dance an improvisation vs. a freestyle? To me, as a Black, queer dancer and choreographer, even though improvisation and freestyle mean largely the same thing, they evoke different cultural cornerstones. My personal freestyle has been informed by and continues to grow from exposure to ballet, hip hop, “contemporary”, belly dance, contact improvisation, and stripping variations like pole, burlesque, and gogoing. I am also inspired by theatre, by gesture, by emotion, by love, by what they call in Westworld “the reveries”. This will be a lesson in falling in love with our bodies, our tactile spaces, our limitations, and our capacities. Let’s find yours. We will explore a multicultural melange of techniques (originations always contextualized) for improvisation, freestyling, and composition that I have come upon throughout my 23 years of dancing. Let’s explore the wholeness of your body and spirit and let’s deepen and increase the ease with which you access your dance.
